New York is the worst-rated big city in America, and we mean that as a compliment. In a country where the bottom of the rating scale has all but gone extinct, the five boroughs kept a left tail.

Everywhere else, the ratings huddle between 4.0 and 4.6 and the genuinely bad restaurants have quietly closed. New York is different. When we pulled the Google rating of 1,850 restaurants across 18 US city centers in June 2026, New York held 11 of the nation’s 28 restaurants rated under three stars, more than any other city we measured. The NYC median sits at 4.3★, under the national 4.4★, and 41 of the 141 Manhattan-area restaurants we sampled rate at or below 4.0★.
Part of it is volume: a city this dense can keep a bad restaurant alive on foot traffic alone, long after a suburb would have starved it out. Part of it is temperament. Either way, the left tail survives here, and that is exactly what a search engine for bad restaurants needs. The full national picture is in the inflation files.
Caveat, honestly: Google returns at most 20 results per search and Manhattan-grade density blows past that cap, so we undersample the city. The truly terrible places exist past the cutoff, and your own search won’t surface them either. The shelf you can actually shop from is even more inflated than these numbers.
Five-star hunting is for cowards.
